Our History As A Church
- The First Christian Association of Lavallette was established in 1883 as a
means of providing worship for the members of Protestant Churches summering in
the village. This group met in member's cottages.
- In 1910 they incorporated as the Union Church of Lavallette, Inter-
Denominational under the laws of the State of New Jersey.
- We are proud of the fact that our Church has hosted the original services of
worship for both the Roman Catholic and Latvian (Lutheran) congregations in
Lavallette.
- In 1930 the Union Church of Lavallette ceased to be a seasonal chapel and
became a year round full service congregation.
- We are united in our witness to the love of God found in our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ and hold our Christian faith as it is defined in the
Apostles Creed.
The History Of Our Building
- In 1887 the founding summer families along with the Borough of Lavallette built
the main portion of the present sanctuary as a Borough Hall and Sanctuary. It was
used by both groups until 1910 when the Union Church purchased the Borough's share
of the building.
- In the 1920's the growth of the, summer population of Lavallette
necessitated the addition of two overflow seating areas in the church building
thus creating the cross shaped church building we enjoy today.
- Later the entrance vestibule of the church was raised to full tower height
and the bell, (which had been rescued from the wreak of a coastal buoy) was hung
in it.
- In 1951 the educational and fellowship hall and a pastoral apartment, (now
the nursery area), was added to the complex.
- In 1960 a new parsonage was built on Camden Avenue.
- In 1961 the tower was capped by a steeple and cross and the front of the
building was brought out around the base of the tower.
- In 1994 the church building was resided and the present beautiful stained
glass memorial windows were installed.
- In 1996 an air-conditioning system was added to the sanctuary to make it
more comfortable to worship there every Sunday of the year.
